What is a driving assessment?

A driving assessment is a comprehensive evaluation designed to determine a patient's ability to drive safely after the onset of a medical condition. This assessment is vital to assess an individual's capacity to operate vehicles without posing a risk to themselves or others.

At Parkway Rehab, our experienced rehabilitation therapists conduct this assessment, referencing the Medical Guidelines on Fitness to Drive by the Singapore Medical Association (2011), and the regulations set out by the Traffic Police under the Road Traffic Act in Singapore.

Why do you need a driving assessment?

A driving assessment is suitable for individuals who held a valid driving license before their medical condition and are looking to resume driving.

What can you expect during a driving assessment?

For a driving assessment at Parkway Rehab, you have to first be referred by a doctor.

Our structured approach ensures not only your safety but also that of other road users. Here are the key steps:

1. Off-road assessment: Before getting behind the wheel, you'll have a detailed interview about your medical history and prior driving experience. This initial evaluation checks your physical, cognitive, and visual capabilities vital for safe driving.

2. On-road assessment: Following the off-road assessment, our therapists, alongside certified driving instructors, will assess your actual driving skills. This on-road assessment is available for Class 3A and 3 vehicles.

3. Driving assessment report: After the evaluations, a comprehensive report detailing recommendations on your ability to drive or learn to drive will be provided. This report is shared with you, your physician, and other relevant entities (when necessary).

4. Follow-up: Depending on the assessment results, our therapists might recommend additional driving lessons or a re-assessment to ensure optimal outcomes.
