Dr Andy Wee is an orthopaedic surgeon at Mount Elizabeth Hospitals and Parkway East Hospital, Singapore.
His subspecialty is performing shoulder and elbow surgery, including fracture fixation, joint reconstruction/replacement and arthroscopic repair/reconstruction, as well as arthroscopic and sports surgery of the knee, hip and ankle.
He is one of the few surgeons who is experienced in arthroscopy (keyhole surgery) of the shoulder, elbow, hip, knee and ankle, and has performed more than 4,000 arthroscopic procedures over the last 12 years.
Prior to joining private practice, he was the head of the department of orthopaedic surgery and sports medicine at Khoo Teck Puat Hospital (KTPH). He is one of the few orthopaedic surgeons in Singapore who has completed 2 separate prestigious North American fellowships and is experienced in 2 areas of subspecialty, and specialises in shoulder and elbow surgery, as well as arthroscopic surgery and sports injuries of the hip, knee and ankle.
Dr Wee completed his bachelor’s degrees at the National University of Singapore (NUS) and completed his specialist training in orthopaedic surgery to become a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, UK in orthopaedics. He received the Health Manpower Development Plan scholarship to undergo 2 years of fellowship training in North America. He first completed his fellowship in shoulder and elbow surgery at the Mayo Clinic in USA, and then completed another fellowship with the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine at the Fowler Kennedy Sport Medicine Clinic in Canada.
He continues to provide expert consults to various public institutions in his field of shoulder and elbow surgery, and arthroscopic sports surgery. He is currently a visiting consultant at KTPH, Singapore General Hospital, Changi General Hospital and Sengkang General Hospital. He is called upon regularly by the various restructured hospitals to provide his surgical expertise in the management of complex and difficult conditions. He has been practising medicine for more than 20 years.
He is a member of several international societies including the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the Arthroscopy Association of North America, and the International Society of Arthroscopy, Knee Surgery & Orthopaedic Sports Medicine. He is also an active member of the Singapore Orthopaedic Association and served on the executive committee.
An avid sportsman, he was a Singapore Squash Racket Association 'A' grade ex- national squash player, representing Singapore in his younger years, and won numerous awards in local and international tournaments.
Dr Wee is active in research and teaching. He has presented at many regional and international conferences, and has won several awards for his research efforts, most notably the prestigious Singapore Orthopaedic Association Young Orthopaedic Investigator award in 2010. He is currently involved in both undergraduate and postgraduate medical education and remains an adjunct assistant professor at NUS Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine.
