Dr Uma Alagappan is a dermatologist at Gleneagles Hospital and Parkway East Hospital, Singapore.
She specialises in paediatric dermatology, women’s dermatology and general dermatology. She also has special interests in chronic eczema, food allergy and immunodermatology.
She is currently a visiting consultant at Singapore General Hospital where she manages adult dermatology patients and contributes to the chronic eczema team. She is also a visiting consultant at KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital (KKH).
Dr Alagappan completed her dermatology training at Changi General Hospital and the National Skin Centre. She subsequently joined KKH’s dermatology service where she subspecialised in paediatric dermatology. She was awarded the Health Manpower Development Plan award to pursue paediatric immunodermatology and allergo-dermatology at Boston Children’s Hospital, USA.
Upon her return, she spearheaded several subspecialty clinics including the food allergy eczema clinic for paediatric eczema patients, immunodermatology clinic and psychology eczema multi-disciplinary clinic. She has been practising medicine for more than 15 years.
Besides her clinical work, Dr Alagappan has been involved in organising and contributing to numerous paediatric and women’s dermatology conferences. She has also been invited to speak and lecture at local, regional and international dermatology conferences. Over the years, she has mentored medical students and international clinical fellows.
She has given public talks on various dermatologic issues including the use of topical steroids and post-menopausal skin. She has also contributed to dermatology-related articles and interviews in the media.
Dr Alagappan is a member of the Dermatological Society of Singapore, where she is a contributing member of the topical steroid withdrawal/addiction workgroup. She is also a committee member of the Asian Society of Pediatric Dermatology and a member of the Allergy and Clinical Immunology Society (Singapore).
