Dr Donald Poon is a medical oncologist practising at Mount Elizabeth Novena Hospital, Singapore.
Dr Poon manages all types of tumours in his general oncology practice, and he has a special interest in geriatric oncology, which is treating elderly patients with cancer. He has a keen interest in sarcoma, melanoma, stomach cancer, colorectal cancer, liver cancer, pancreatic cancer, bile duct cancer, gastrointestinal stromal tumours and neuroendocrine tumours/carcinoid tumours.
Dr Poon graduated from the National University of Singapore in 1996. He underwent advanced specialty training in medical oncology at the National Cancer Centre, Singapore (NCCS), and subsequently practised in NCCS before starting his private practice in 2010.
Dr Poon was Assistant Professor in Medicine at Duke-NUS Graduate Medical School from 2008 to 2010. He was the Honorary Medical Director of Singapore Cancer Society from 2007 to 2009, and Founding President of the Society of Geriatric Oncology in Singapore. He developed a geriatric oncology programme that specialises in treating elderly patients with all varieties of cancer, and was given the SingHealth HMDP training award in geriatric oncology in Moffitt Cancer Centre, USA in 2006.
Dr Poon previously received a National Medical Research Council (NMRC) grant award of more than $1 million as a co-principal investigator for research in liver cancer. His research in geriatric oncology was selected for oral presentation at the prestigious 2008 American Society of Clinical Oncology Annual Meeting. He is an active clinical investigator in multiple investigator-initiated and industry-sponsored clinical trials.
Dr Poon is regularly invited to speak in various regional and international specialty forums such as the European Society of Medical Oncology (ESMO) Neuroendocrine Tumour Preceptorship Programme, and his oncology research work has been published in more than 40 scientific papers in high impact factor international oncology journals such as Cancer, Journal of Clinical Oncology, and Lancet Oncology.
In recognition of his efforts in patient care, Dr Poon received the Humanity Healthcare Award in 2006 and STAR Excellent Service Award in 2009.
