Dr Liau Kui Hin is a general surgeon at Mount Elizabeth Novena Hospital, Singapore.
His clinical expertise is in the specialised care of liver cancer, gallbladder and bile duct cancer, pancreatic cancer, gallstone diseases, and benign liver, biliary and pancreatic disorders.
His other subspecialty interests are surgical infection, soft tissue sarcoma and neuro-endocrine oncology. His expertise skills in surgery include cancer surgery, gastrointestinal surgery, hernia surgery, acute surgical care, emergency surgery, laparoscopic surgery and endoscopy.
He has more than 18 years of clinical experience in diagnosing and treating digestive cancers (especially liver cancer, gallbladder cancer, bile duct cancer, pancreatic cancer and carcinoid or neuroendocrine cancer), surgical infections and gastrointestinal diseases.
Prior to establishing his private practice, Dr Liau was the senior consultant surgeon in the department of general surgery at Tan Tock Seng Hospital. During his tenure, he served as the chief of the hepatobiliary and pancreatic surgery unit in the department of general surgery. He was also the deputy head of the department of general surgery at the hospital from 2008 to 2010.
Dr Liau graduated from the Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine, NUS and obtained his postgraduate surgical degree in 1998. The same year, he was admitted to the fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, UK. He continued his training in cancer management at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, New York, US. In 2003, he was conferred fellowships by the Academy of Medicine, the College of Surgeons Singapore, and the International College of Surgeons.
Besides being the founder of Asian-Pacific Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association, he was a council member in the association from 2005 to 2011. Dr Liau was also the vice-president of Hepato Pancreato Biliary Association (Singapore) and a council member of the College of Surgeons, Singapore.
He is a member of the Society for Surgery of Alimentary Tract, Endoscopic & Laparoscopic Surgeons of Asia, and International Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Association. Having a keen interest in the care of patients with neuroendocrine tumours (carcinoids), he serves on the executive committee of the Carcinoid & Neuroendocrine Tumor Society and is also a member of the European Neuroendocrine Society.
Dr Liau belongs to an international surgical infections studies group, which reviews the practice guidelines for the management of surgical infections.
